The winter season in Old Varkaus invites culture lovers
Varkaus, located on the shores of Lake Saimaa, does not go into hibernation when the weather turns cold and the frosts arrive, because the winter season is a time when Varkaus’ pride and joy, the long-established Varkaus Theatre, is the main attraction. This professional theatre is one of Finland’s oldest continuously operating artistic institutions, with roots dating back to the late 19th century.
As part of Old Varkaus, the Varkaus Theatre is a beloved arts community that, in addition to its high-quality and varied programme, offers local residents and tourists interesting visiting performances. The ambitious repertoire, quality acting and professional theatre-making are widely known in Finland, and theatre lovers come from further and further afield to visit the town.
A winter’s back is broken by a cultural trip
Varkaus and its heart, Old Varkaus, will happily greet winter cultural tourists with other attractions. Winter’s back can be broken by conjuring up a little luxury in the form of a mini-break during the darkest time of the year. Local cultural offerings, a night or two in a hotel and good food and beverages will ensure that spring is just around the corner.
Check out the accommodation in Old Varkaus at the stylish Hotel Oscar, the idyllic old post office Vanha Postitalo or the nostalgic Taideniitty (Art Meadow) residences, all within walking distance of cultural experiences. Our numerous restaurants, such as Kaks Ruusua (Two Roses), Keskuskonttori (Central office) and Harri’s Food Factory, offer wintertime culinary delights and invite you to enjoy a cultural aftertaste.
