There is a lot of delicious local food in the Varkaus area, including a variety of products made from fish, meat, grains and berries.
Specialties include caviar and sturgeon from the local area, which are served in restaurants of Varkaus and can be purchased as gifts at a lower price than anywhere else in Finland. Fresh lake fish is available in the Taulumäki market on Fridays and Saturdays and in the supermarket counter during the week as well.

The range of salad and herb products of Järvikylä is the most comprehensive in Finland and they are grown purely without chemical additives. AitoMaku salad dressings complement the product range for everyday and special occasions. The sparkling wines, red wines and white wines of Valamo are made from Finnish berries. There are several meat producers in the Varkaus area, as well as producers of vegetables, berries and bakery products.

Local food is available for purchase in Varkaus any time during the year in the Taulumäki market, Sepon Lihatori’s shops, K-market in Herttu, and in the local food shops that are open from June to August at the Taipale Canal Museum.

During summer 2019, there will be a pop up shop of Savon Silmut that sells local food in Wanha Asema.
